Sourcing pet products in the UK and Ireland: what to check before you order
A practical checklist for UK and Irish pet retailers: margin protection, MOQs, lead times, labelling and how to test a new brand without dead stock.

A pet product does not fail on the shelf. It fails at the point of order — wrong pack size, wrong price ladder, a brand that undercuts you online three weeks later. This is the checklist we run with retailers in the UK and Ireland before a single pallet moves.
1. Ask who else sells it, and at what price
The single fastest way to lose a category is stocking a brand that sells the same SKU direct to consumers below your shelf price. Before you commit, ask the distributor two questions: which channels are already served in your market, and what the brand's own D2C price is.
- Brand sells D2C at or below your retail price — walk away or negotiate a channel policy in writing.
- Brand sells D2C above retail, or not at all in your market — your margin is defensible.
- Marketplace listings by third parties — ask who controls them.
2. Match MOQ to your actual rate of sale
A twelve-month cover of a new SKU is not a trial, it is a warehouse problem. Start with a quantity you can clear in one season, then reorder. Distributors that hold local stock let you do this; direct import from the manufacturer usually does not.
A sensible first order
- Three to five SKUs from one brand, not one SKU from five brands — the display tells a story and the reorder is simple.
- Enough units to cover eight to twelve weeks of expected sell-through.
- One hero SKU with the strongest margin, placed at eye level.
3. Confirm labelling and compliance for your market
Pet food and treats sold in the UK and Ireland carry labelling duties that differ from the rest of the EU, and Great Britain and Northern Ireland are not identical cases. Ask for the label artwork you will actually receive, not the brand's export version.
- Complete or complementary feed declaration and composition in English.
- Analytical constituents and additives listed as required.
- Batch code, best-before, net quantity and the responsible business address.
- For products moving between GB, NI and the EU: the correct establishment and documentation route.
4. Test lead time before you rely on it
Quoted lead time and real lead time diverge in week six, not week one. Place a small order first and measure what actually happens: confirmation speed, dispatch, damage rate, and how the supplier behaves when something goes wrong. That behaviour is the product you are really buying.
5. Build a range, not a shelf of orphans
Buyers who win the category do the same thing: one credible brand per need state — daily food, functional treats, dental, grooming, toys — with clear price steps between good, better and best. Gaps get filled by the customer's phone.
Minimal Brands works with retailers and wholesalers across the UK and Ireland with local stock, English-language labelling and a channel policy that protects the shelf. Trade accounts open in one form.
Questions buyers ask
- What is a realistic first order for a new pet brand?
- Three to five SKUs from a single brand, in a quantity you expect to clear within eight to twelve weeks. Reorder rather than over-commit — that is how you learn the sell-through without carrying dead stock.
- How do I protect my margin against a brand's own webshop?
- Ask the distributor for the brand's D2C pricing in your market and for a written channel policy before you order. If the brand undercuts retail online, the shelf economics never recover.
- Do I need different labelling for the UK, Ireland and Northern Ireland?
- Requirements differ between Great Britain, Northern Ireland and the EU single market, including Ireland. Ask your supplier for the exact label artwork and documentation route for the market you sell into, not a generic export label.
- Can I buy from Minimal Brands as an independent shop?
- Yes. We supply independents, chains and wholesalers across the UK and Ireland. Open a trade account and a person replies — no minimum chain size.
