Finding a pet distributor in Poland and CEE: a guide for UK and Irish brands

How UK and Irish pet brands enter Poland and Central Europe: distributor selection, PLN price ladders, Polish labelling, VAT and EORI, and the trade shows buyers attend.

Poland is the entry point most UK and Irish pet brands use for Central and Eastern Europe: one warehouse, one distributor, one price list, and onward reach into the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Romania and the Baltics. This is what a Polish distributor will ask you for, and what you should ask back.

Why Poland first, not Germany first

  • Warehousing and last-mile costs are materially lower than in Western Europe, so your landed cost per pallet stays workable at launch volumes.
  • Independent pet retail is still fragmented, which means a distributor with field reps can build real distribution rather than fight for two national accounts.
  • From a Polish warehouse, most of CEE is a two-to-three-day road delivery inside the single market — no customs paperwork between EU states.

Post-Brexit: what changes for a GB brand

Goods moving from Great Britain into the EU are an import. Ireland-based brands ship inside the single market and skip most of this; GB-based brands do not.

  • You need an EU EORI number, or an importer of record who has one — usually the distributor.
  • Products of animal origin, including many treats and raw-adjacent lines, require an approved establishment, a health certificate and a border control post entry.
  • Commodity codes and preferential origin decide whether duty applies under the TCA — get this confirmed before you quote a price.
  • Agree Incoterms in writing. DDP looks generous but puts EU import compliance on you; FCA or DAP with the distributor as importer is usually cleaner.

Polish labelling is not optional

Feed, treats and supplements sold in Poland need Polish-language labelling that meets EU feed rules: complete or complementary declaration, composition, analytical constituents, additives, batch code, best-before, net quantity and the responsible business address. A sticker solution works for a first container; printed artwork wins the reorder.

Build the price ladder in PLN before the call

  • Ex-works price per SKU and per pallet layer, in EUR or GBP, with the FX assumption stated.
  • Target Polish retail price in PLN, VAT-inclusive — Polish buyers think in shelf price, not in ex-works.
  • Distributor margin and retailer margin, both after transport and VAT. If either is thin, the listing dies quietly.
  • Your own D2C price for Poland. If your webshop ships to Poland below shelf price, expect the conversation to end there.

Questions to ask the distributor

  • Which retail chains, independents and e-commerce accounts do you actually invoice, and how often?
  • Do you hold stock locally, and what is your reorder cycle for a new brand?
  • Who is the named person on my account, and do they visit stores?
  • How do you police pricing across marketplaces such as Allegro?
  • What does the first twelve months look like in SKUs, not slides?

Use the September trade window

PetExpo in Bydgoszcz runs 25–27 September 2026 and is where Polish and CEE buyers set the spring range. PATS Birmingham follows on 27–29 September 2026. A brand that lands samples, a PLN price list and a stock date in that window is trading by Q1.

Minimal Brands is a Polish company distributing pet supplies across Poland, CEE, the EU, the UK and Ireland. We import, label, hold stock and sell to trade buyers — and we tell you in one call whether the shelf economics work.

Questions buyers ask

How does a UK pet brand find a distributor in Poland?
Shortlist distributors that already invoice the channel you want, send a price list with distributor and retail levels in PLN, confirm Polish labelling readiness and stock availability, then meet at PetExpo or on a call. Distributors decide on price ladder, compliance and stock — not on brand decks.
Do I need Polish-language labels to sell pet food in Poland?
Yes. Feed and treats placed on the Polish market require Polish labelling compliant with EU feed regulations, including composition, analytical constituents, additives, batch code, best-before, net quantity and the responsible business address.
What customs paperwork applies when shipping pet products from the UK to Poland?
Shipments from Great Britain are EU imports: an EU EORI, correct commodity codes, TCA origin evidence, and — for products of animal origin — an approved establishment, health certification and a border control post entry. Ireland-based brands ship inside the single market and avoid most of it.
Can one Polish distributor cover the whole CEE region?
Often yes for a launch. From a Polish warehouse the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Romania and the Baltics are inside the single market and reachable in two to three days by road, so one stock point can serve the region before you split territories.
