Launching a pet brand in the UK and Ireland: the distribution checklist
What a pet brand needs before entering the UK and Irish trade: pricing structure, labelling, stock model, trade shows and the questions distributors will ask.

Brands usually arrive with a deck. Distributors want four numbers, a label and a stock plan. Get those right and the conversation moves to shelves in a fortnight.
The four numbers that decide the meeting
- Your distributor price, ex-works, per SKU and per pallet layer.
- Your recommended retail price in GBP and EUR.
- Your own D2C price in the same markets — the number brands hide, and the one that kills deals.
- Case pack, pallet configuration and shelf life on arrival.
If the price ladder does not leave a workable margin for both the distributor and the retailer once VAT and freight are in, no amount of brand story fixes it.
Labelling comes before the pitch
For food and treats, English-language labelling that meets the destination market's feed rules is a precondition, not a later fix. Great Britain, Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland are three documentation contexts. Bring the artwork and the paperwork route to the first call.
Decide your stock model honestly
Ship-on-order
Lowest risk for you, slowest for the buyer. Works for slow-turning, high-value lines. It rarely wins listings against brands that ship next day from a local warehouse.
Local stock via distributor
Your product sits in-market, ships to a retailer in days, and gets reordered because it is easy to reorder. This is how most pet categories actually move in the UK and Ireland.
Protect the channel or lose it
The fastest way to make retailers drop you is to discount direct. Set a channel policy before launch: D2C at RRP or above, marketplace control, and a clear position on promotional windows. Write it down and hold to it.
Use the trade calendar
Two dates anchor the autumn in our markets: PetExpo in Bydgoszcz on 25–27 September 2026 and PATS Birmingham on 27–29 September 2026. Buyers plan their spring range around them. Arrive with samples, a price list and a stock date — not a concept.
What we ask for
- Price list with distributor and retail levels.
- Label artwork for the destination market.
- Top five SKUs by sell-through in your home market.
- Available stock and lead time for the next quarter.
Minimal Brands places pet brands on shelves in the UK, Ireland, Poland and across the EU, with local stock and named account managers. Send the four numbers and we will tell you in one call whether the shelf works.
Questions buyers ask
- What do distributors check first when a pet brand approaches them?
- Price ladder, labelling readiness, stock availability and your direct-to-consumer pricing. Those four determine whether a retailer can make money on the product.
- Do I need local stock to sell in the UK and Ireland?
- Not always, but ship-on-order loses to brands that dispatch from a local warehouse in days. For fast-moving categories, in-market stock is effectively a listing requirement.
- Which trade shows matter for pet distribution in 2026?
- PetExpo in Bydgoszcz on 25–27 September 2026 for Poland and CEE, and PATS Birmingham on 27–29 September 2026 for the UK and Ireland. Minimal Brands is at both.
